One of the biggest headaches for any mine is fuel costs and finding ways to reduce fuel consumption is an ever-present challenge.
And, arguably one of the easiest ways to reduce fuel consumption is right under your nose – or should we say, under the cab.
We’re talking about lubrication. Advanced lubricants can improve the fuel efficiency of diesel engines, which can add up to big savings over an entire fleet of haul trucks.
A 3% improvement adds up to millions saved
One U.S. mine that operates 30 CAT haul trucks decided to upgrade its fleet from C series to F series haul trucks. But, while these new machines were more powerful, the horsepower and drivetrains in these haul trucks increased fuel burn.
To help better manage overall fuel consumption, the mine’s maintenance staff collaborated with Mobil™ engineers to see what could be done. After a full assessment, the Mobil™ team recommended the use of a FD1-approved final drive oil formulated specifically for high loads and off-highway trucking applications.
After being put into use, the haul trucks saw a major improvement in fuel efficiency. The end result was eye-popping:
